Pelican identified an opportunity to develop a custom in-case lighting solution for users operating in low-light environments. Through user research, Pelican discovered that many customers had created their own improvised or DIY lighting setups, indicating a clear unmet need for a more reliable integrated solution.

The primary target users included stage technicians and road crew professionals who frequently need to access equipment quickly and efficiently in dark or dimly lit conditions. Pelican aimed to design a lighting system that seamlessly integrates with their existing cases to improve the overall usability and user experience.

The KEK Design team conducted an internal brainstorming session centered on open ideation, encouraging a wide range of concepts without constraint. This approach allowed the team to explore diverse solutions addressing the identified user needs.

The resulting ideas were synthesized into a focused set of sketch concepts, which were then presented to Pelican for feedback. Key design considerations included attachment methods, articulation mechanisms, and overall versatility across use cases. Based on these criteria, low-profile, articulating concepts were selected to advance into the next phase of development.

Building on the initial concept phase, the KEK Design team advanced key elements of the solution into more defined design features. This phase focused on developing a secure and intuitive attachment method, ensuring the lighting system could be seamlessly integrated within the case.

A holster mechanism was designed to allow users to easily stow and access the light while keeping it firmly in place during transportation. Articulation mechanisms were also refined to provide flexibility in positioning, enabling users to direct light precisely where needed while maintaining a compact, low-profile form. These developments further aligned the solutions with the functional demands of Pelican Products.

Following the selection of a final design direction, the KEK Design team translated the concept into detailed engineering intent for the Pelican ModLight. This includes defining key specifications, materials, mechanisms, and assembly considerations to ensure the design could be effectively manufactured.

The engineering intent package enabled Pelican to move forward with implementation, providing a clear framework for production while preserving the core functionality, usability, and design integrity established during earlier phases.
